The Witness replaces the angel and falls in better keeping with the theme of a small Italian village.

When someone is killed by the Mafia, and after the Mafia have gone to sleep, the moderator, without waking all of the civilians, announces who died. That person wakes up and flips his/her card.

Then, the next surviving person clockwise from the deceased will be called, by name, to awake. This person is the witness and gets to ask about someone, much as the angel would. Note that the witness may be a member of the Mafia, but the moderator should go through the formalities anyway.

Variant. The deceased points to someone who becomes the witness.
